Vote me, I support Corbyn – A hollow battlecry

Standard

Telling someone you’re a Corbyn supporter so they should get your vote is not enough, taking a vote for granted because you say you’re a socialist is not enough. There needs to be more, much more in order to galvanise the kind of support we need at grassroots level.

That means setting out a local vision, working within local communities and building an (at first) informal bottom up structure within our local constituency. The internal struggle within the CLP over Corbyn is one huge distraction, it’s a movement – it isn’t about Corbyn, it isn’t even about the Labour Party *gasp*. It is about that hungry person you passed on your way to work, or that homeless person you see outside your local shop, it is about a single mother facing eviction, or an elderly person that dies because of winter. It is about those suffering at the bottom, and the more we get bedded to internal struggles, the more we let them down, the more we look internally, the less we are doing externally.

So don’t expect people to support you just because you support Corbyn, or just because you’re a socialist. You need to prove to the people that you are worthy of their support, you need to show them, with your actions not just your words that you are on their side, and that they can rely on you to fight with and for them.

The vote me because I support Corbyn message is unsustainable (Corbyn won’t be here forever), while it will galvanise us to a degree, it can’t go much further than that. I want to vote for a local candidate whether that is in an internal election, a local election or a general election because I like what they’re having to say, I like where they want to take my community and I can see through their track record that they’re trustworthy – they mean what they’re saying.

If we want to transform our communities we can’t rely on Corbyn, we can’t wait until the next GE. The power to transform our communities is with all of us, the power of the movement is not with one man at the top, but all those engaged in the struggle. Less vote me because I support Corbyn, and more tapping in to that message of hope and unity that he brought to the mainstream.

Now is our chance, so let us harness the energy Corbyn has unleashed and utilise the message, but let us take ownership of it and make it our own. Make it local, make it relevant, take it and make it part of the DNA of our communities.

I could see the necessity when Labour were in a full blown civil war, but we have won that war, it is now time to win the peace.

Disarm Terror

Standard

The weapon of the terrorist is fear, their ammunition is hatred. We cannot give into fear, nor can we allow ourselves to be fueled by hatred, only hope and love can conquer fear and hatred.

We have to hope for a better world, we have to fight to make a better world possible, because there is a sickness in our societies. Greed has become the dominant force, marginalisation of the poor, the dispossed, give way to a lack of identity and self worth. People are afraid not only of the terrorist, but of paying their bills, of living hand to mouth. Search in your heart and you will feel this sickness, because we are one, and it exists within all of us, when one feels pain, it effects us all.

It is easy to begin to hate, it is easier to hate than to love, it is easier to hate than to understand. There is no excusing acts of terorrism, but these problems cannot be solved by more secuirty, more bombs, more weapons of war, more bullets, these are weapons of hatred, weapons of fear, and they can only add more fuel to the fire, they can only help these evil forces grow. Only through the power of unity, only through loving your neighbour, loving those around you, can we create the bonds that can halt these forces in their tracks.

We are not powerless, we can effect change, the truth is we are powerful beyond measure, and those that have placed themselves in a position of power, have tricked us, robbing us of our strength and sapping us of our power. The greatest act of defiance in the face of this, the true display of strength, is give yourself to those around you, help those that need it, and together we can overcome any adversity and challenge.

If we do not, the alternative is to horrible to imagine, the rising forces of racism and xenophobia, it is a drama we all have seen the ending to, at we all know it is not a happy one.

If you can remember only one thing remember this; the more fear you feel, the more hatred you spread, the stronger they become, the more power that you give them.

Woe is Society

Standard

Maaan, when you look at who runs what, how can you not feel anything but anger?

The vast amount of wealth sits in a handful of peoples bank accounts, ain’t nobody working harder than 50% of the population, I don’t care if you only sleep 1 hour a bloody night.
Power sits in the hand of a small rich elite, why the hell do we let them do all the decision making?
Every single layer of society we look at, is all controlled by the same power interests, the same small group of people, who only have their own interests at heart.

This pattern has repeated it self throughout history, and alongside this, there has been people like you and me, the disenfranchised, the poor, the oppressed, the downtrodden – those that have less, those that have little, those who have nothing.

We have fought throughout the ages for a fairer and more just society, we have fought to get a little more of the pie, instead of subsisting on the crumbs. Shit we have fought to not eat pie, we have fought so we can eat cake!

Whether you actively take part in this struggle or not, this struggle is happening, you can sit on the fence, you can watch from the side lines, as our futures literally get stolen from us, or you can become an active participant, but ultimately when you moan about the way things are, the only way they are going to change, is if you take an active part, we are all powerful beyond measure.

We are the glue that runs the machine we call society, we do not need stock brokers to run society, we do need cleaners – we are the ones that are running things in all but name, why then do we not get a fair share in all this? We do the majority share of the work, without getting our just reward.

If when you were a kid someone sat you down with a contract and said to you: “Ok, we want you to work five days a week, nine hours a day, for the rest of your life, in exchange for that, we will give you a little bit of money, so you can buy your own food, and live in a house, while we take the majority of the profits, live in a bigger house, eat better food, drink better wine, be your boss we will make all your decisions for you, all you need to do, is be our slaves” – Ain’t nobody going to sign that contract.

This world is ours, all of ours, do not sign your freedom away, as the saying goes “all evil needs to triumph is for good men (people) to do nothing” – Another way is possible, we just have to make it so.
